Students will return to school for the start of the second semester on Wednesday, January 8th. We will have printed copies of student schedules available in the mid-level commons on Wednesday morning. Students may also access their schedules in Infinite Campus. Students may fill out a schedule request change form Wednesday through Friday. Schedule request forms need to be turned into Student Services.
Report cards from the first semester will be sent home with students on Wednesday, January 8th.
Mayland Welding students: This is a reminder that your welding classes for the Spring semester will start on Monday, January 6th at 8am at Mayland’s Newland campus.
Mayland students that have online classes, please check your Moodle account for start dates to your classes. Many of them will start on Monday January 6th.
Mr. O'Hagan will be at Avery High this week to help with schedules, handout textbooks, and answer any questions you may have.

Not every senior has to take the WorkKeys test. The seniors who need to take the WorkKeys test have taken CTE courses and they have received an email about taking the test.

If your child is a senior and did not take the WorkKeys test earlier this week, please have them come to school this Thursday by 8:15 to take the test. Although this test is not a graduation requirement, the Department of Public Instruction holds us accountable for testing at least 95% of our students. Students who score a level Silver or above will be treated to lunch at a to be determined restaurant. Thank you for your cooperation.

The high school exam schedule begins this week. On Monday, December 16th, Math I, English 2, and WorkKeys exams will be given. On Tuesday, December 17th, Math 3, Biology, and WorkKeys exams will be given. On Wednesday, December 18th, the CTE Ag Mechanics exam will be given. On Thursday, December 19th, the CTE Culinary and Health Sciences exams will be given. Make up exams will be given on Friday, December 20th. Exams will start each day by 8:15. Students who arrive to school after testing has started will not be able to enter the testing session and will need to take the make up exam. Please encourage students to come to school to take their exams on the scheduled day. Students must have a written note signed by a parent or guardian in order to leave early once testing is complete.
We will have another FAFSA Night tomorrow night from 5:30 to 7:00 for seniors in the media center. We will provide pizza and cookies for all who attend.
The Band will have their winter band concert tomorrow night at 6:30 in the gym. Please join us if you are able.
Finally, Friday, December 20th is an early release day for students. Dismissal will be at 12:00.

We will host a second FAFSA night tomorrow night from 5:00 to 7:30 in the Media Center for seniors and their parents. We will have pizza and cookies for all who attend. Come Back Shack in Boone will be supporting our men's basketball team all day and evening tomorrow. 25% of all proceeds will be donated to the men's basketball team. Please tell them you are supporting Avery High School. This Saturday we will have a Christmas Market at Avery High School from 11:00 to 2:00. The students of our Life Skills classes will be selling their holiday crafts. We will also have food and free Santa pictures. Students will return to school tomorrow, November 6th. We will operate on a 2 hour delay with first period beginning at 10:10. School will dismiss at 3:05. If your child is not able to attend school due to hurricane or transportation issues, please call the front office and ask to speak to a school counselor. We have resources available for families and/or students who need assistance. Please contact the front office if resources are needed. We are looking forward to having our Vikings back in the school building!
Our football team will play Mitchell High School this Friday at 7:30 at home. Before the game, beginning at 7:00, we will recognize all seniors for fall sports. Our soccer team is advancing to the first round of the state playoffs. The game will be hosted this Saturday at home. The team we are playing and the time is yet to be announced.

An important message for students taking Mayland dual enrollment courses:
Mayland will be restarting classes by October 28. Our plan aims to provide multiple opportunities for students to move forward as their situations allow.
We will be reopening 1st 8 week courses to allow students to complete work. If you are registered for a 2nd 8 week course, you are still registered, with most starting on October 28.
Please check your MCC email and Moodle as you can. Your MCC Instructors will be communicating changes to the course schedule and any changes to the syllabus.
We know each student has unique circumstances, so please reach out to your MCC Instructor and discuss your situation. It is our hope that every student is able to complete their classes, and MCC is committed to doing everything we can to ensure success.

Please come to Newland Elementary on Tuesday, October 22nd from 9:00 to 1:00 or Thursday, October 24th from 9:00 to 1:00 to receive help with college applications. On Tuesday, wear your Avery swag. On Thursday, rep your favorite college. Snacks will be provided. We hope to see our seniors there!
