Welcome to Avery High School

Avery County High School, home of the Vikings, is located 10 minutes west of Grandfather Mountain, in Newland, North Carolina. Our school colors are black and red, and we are home to approximately 600 students in grades 9 through 12. We are 12 miles from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, and 19 miles from Appalachian State University.

Avery County High School opened in 1968. We are a 1A high school. We have a 1 to 1 computer initiative (laptops for all students and staff since 2011), a school-wide wireless network, STEM and Freshman Academies, as well as extensive collaboration with Mayland Community College.
